Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis

Action 1992 Dos Dosbox LucasArts Isometric

Decent enough actioner

The adventure version of Fate of Atlantis is widely considered a classic of the graphic adventure genre, standing comfortably alongside the Monkey Island games, and while this action version of the same story fails to live up to the standards of its cousin, it remains an enjoyable enough slice of fun. The game weaves an entertaining story that feels authentically Indy-like and provides plenty of whip-cracking and fisticuffs to please fans of the movie and of action games alike. The game wastes no time in getting to the action, opening in Monte Carlo with Indy on the trail of several ancient discs which will open the gates to the lost city of Atlantis. His quest takes him through several distinct environments, including desert islands, Nazi subs, and of course Atlantis itself, but without all the puzzles and with a greater focus on all-out arcade fun. The game is presented via a 3D isometric perspective, with Indy punching, kicking and shooting his way through the hordes of bad guys that stand in his way. The Fate of Atlantis is straightforward enough but no less enjoyable for that fact. It's not the greatest action game ever, but certainly provides enough rough stuff to keep most genre fans happy. The visuals are quite appealing, with vibrant and generally atmospheric environments and well animated sprites, with the sound backing things up nicely. Gameplay is enjoyable but is most definitely difficult, so don't expect an easy ride. However, if you're up to the challenge, then there is plenty to enjoy here.
