Go get 'em tiger!

Heroes Over Europe is the sequel to Heroes of the Pacific and like that title, this one is an arcade flying simulator that ditches most of the realism of other games such as F-29 Retaliator and replaces it with fast-paced shooting fun. It's not a game for you if you value authenticity in your flight sims, but if you're just looking for pure dogfighting action, it makes for a fun ride. The story aspect of the game follows three pilots as they go head-to-head with the Luftwaffe and sees them taking on a variety of tough missions, from breaking out prisoners of war, escorting bombers into Europe and fighting through the chaos of the London Blitz. There are fourteen missions in total, which are based on real events from the conflict, while you've also got over forty different planes to try out, including legends such as the Spitfire, P-47 Thunderbolt, and P-51 Mustang. There's a multiplayer mode too, although good luck with that, while there are also some interesting new mechanics over the previous game, including the useful ability to take out an enemy in one shot with the Ace Kill move. Heroes Over Europe isn't going to satisfy the hardcore flight sim crowd but for anyone looking to move on from the simple arcade thrills of Afterburner to something a bit more involving should find this a good choice. The story is actually quite entertaining and the missions are certainly varied enough to keep you playing, with a good level of challenge too. Throw in some lovely visuals and you're left with a solid arcade flight sim.
