Keeping the spirit alive
The original Legend of Grimrock was a fine bit of dungeon crawling that did a great job of recreating the experience of classics like Stonekeep and this sequel continues in the same high quality vein. You don't need to have played the original to enjoy this one, so if you're just in the mood for some fantasy adventuring, you can't go wrong with this. The story finds four prisoners washed up on a secluded island which just happens to be filled with mysterious ruins and creepy dungeons. If they want to escape, they're going to have to navigate this minefield, solving puzzles and battling monsters as they go. This one actually places more emphasis on puzzling than other games, so a good sense of observation and perception will be useful to survive. You have all the usual features of such games, including a fairly deep set of customization options for your party, plenty of weapons and gear, heaps of nasty monsters and of course magic. Although this is clearly an indie title, it's one which comes across as very polished and professional, with a lot of effort clearly having gone into every aspect. The visuals are generally fine, with some nice animation and well designed characters and environments which create a great atmosphere. Gameplay is highly enjoyable with a great mix of exploration, combat and puzzling and which proves to be enthralling and challenging. The puzzles are genuinely clever and very satisfying to solve and are perhaps the game's highlight, but however you look at it, this is a great experience.
