The Mortal Kombat series is right up there with the Street Fighter franchise as one of the true legends of the fighting genre. It might not offer as much depth as its rival but when it comes to sheer bloody mayhem, Mortal Kombat still can't be beat. And this tenth offering in the main series serves up pretty much everything you could hope for, with loads of characters, heaps of action and of course those notorious fatalities. The storyline is surprisingly in-depth for a fighting game and picks up 20 years after the previous title and which finds Earthrealm once more under assault from the forces of the Netherrealm. The story introduces a number of new characters to the lineup of familiar faces and for the gameplay it's pretty much business as usual. There are 24 characters to control in a series of one-on-one matches which see you using an array of kicks, punches, fatalities and even brutalities to end your opponents in the most grisly way possible. Alongside the story mode, you've got other options such as Survivor and King of the Hill, but however you look at it, this is about the violence. If you are somewhat faint of heart, this is not for you. However, if you are into bloody action, then this still ranks as a huge amount of fun. The fighting is deeper than before, requiring fast reflexes and an element of strategy, and however you play, it's an awful lot of fun. The finishing moves are gorier and even more over-the-top than ever and there's lot of entertainment to be had from this aspect of the game. Definitely one for fighting fans.
