Horror to make you think
For a truly terrifying and visually stunning slice of psychological horror, then Neverending Nightmares has to be checked out. It's a bold and genuinely disturbing adventure that actually has something to say about fear rather than just being a bunch of shocks and scares, but which doesn't stint on the terror either. The game was actually inspired by its creators own personal battles with OCD and depression and finds the player in the role of a character who wakes up from a nightmare only to find that he is still in one. He then gets to explore a few mysterious and very dangerous environments, seeking a way out from the terror, while uncovering the story to his past. There are plenty of very frightening creatures to encounter as you explore, and survival largely requires lots of running away and hiding, while there are also several different endings to discover and which rely on your choices and actions made during the course of the game. Perhaps the most striking thing about Neverending Nightmares is its visual style, which is inspired by the art of Edward Gorey and is rendered in stark black and white, with the occasional splash of color to indicate items to be interacted with. The gameplay is intriguing and exploration is a genuinely fraught affair, with a real sense of dread as you venture bravely forth, while the many encounters are just as terrifying. There are however a few too many moments of tedium where little actually happens, but this quibble aside, this is an entertaining horror romp that actually makes you think.
