Nord and Sud

Strategy 1993 Dos Infogrames Turn based War

Turn based strategy depicting the American secession war

The game offers you the minimum amount of tabletop amenities: a strategic map on top of which your units are catalogued and kept track of through very simple graphics, a number of options that have to do with setting supply chains, and after that, it's all you, trying to find out how to make the best use of your units and how to arrange them so as to have the advantage of the local geographical particularities or have an upper hand due to flanked attacks or in areas that might offer your foot troupes some concealment. The Nord and Sud game does not go too deep into the economic portion of the strategy, but you do have some options. You can order reinforcements, setting up of encampments to act as regrouping areas, and so on. However, you don't get to dictate the economics in which you find yourself, which contributes to a play style that is more direct and also more tactical. Although you don't get access to the unit level, you won't feel that certain tactical options are wasted, mainly due to the fact that the era made use of less potent fire weapons, while the close encounter skirmishes were pretty much a game of chance as much as a game of alertness/morale. Not the best top down strategy around, but not a bad one either. For those looking to re-enact the secession wars, this is a good way to try to do it.
