Old-school Battlezone homage

Spectre VR pays homage to classic arcade shooters like Battlezone and updates its own forerunner Spectre to provide a simple but highly exciting blaster that is perfect for fans of death and fragfests like Doom and Quake. It lacks the complexity and depth of these classics but nevertheless provides enough intense action to keep all but the most demanding of retro fans happy. The game dispenses with any pretense at narrative depth and believable characters and instead focuses on one thing: hardcore, full-on multiplayer deathmatches where victory goes to the fastest, meanest and most efficient death-dealer. In similar fashion to other such shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, there's a few options in terms of game modes, although the game is a little lacking in this respect which may prove disappointing. However, the main capture the flag mode that is offered is entertaining enough to be able to gloss over any omissions. Anyone familiar with shooters will be right at home here, both in terms of gameplay, which simply requires players to blast their opponents while achieving the mode's objective, and the controls which are intuitive and responsive. The visuals were reasonably impressive for their and still stand up today, although they do seem more like a homage to Battlezone than an attempt to do anything original or imaginative. Nonetheless, they move around at a fair old lick which should keep dedicated shooter fans happy. This is a statement which applies to the game in general. It's not something with a great deal of depth but it is fast, furious and above all fun, so if that's what you look for in a game, this is your new best friend.
