The world is not enough

Another of Ubisoft's most popular franchises, alongside Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia, the Splinter Cell series is a fine set of stealth/action games that should appeal to followers of Metal Gear Solid. Conviction continues in the same general vein as previous installments but it does follow on from the events of Double Agent so to get the most out of it, you might want to check out that one first. Here, we find series hero Sam Fisher with only one thing in his heart: vengeance. When he receives a call from an old friend informing his daughter might still be alive, he finds himself once more caught up in a complex plot to save the US from yet another mysterious threat. What follows is another third-person action adventure that is a little lighter on the stealth than is usual for the series. There are fewer gadgets to help conceal yourself but you still have access to a wide arsenal so you can take out the bad guys with maximum efficiency, with grenades, guns, and mines all on your shopping list. Although the changes to the stealth mechanics might upset some purists, there's no denying that Conviction remains an enjoyable adventure. It's got a gripping and well-told story with lots of twists and turns that will keep you hooked to the end while the gameplay is just as compelling, with heaps of action setpieces that are genuinely exciting to experience. The visuals are top notch, with lots of impressive James Bond-style environments to explore so really, if you're into spy action games, this needs to be in your collection.
