Reach for the stars
Star Trek Online is the perfect chance for sci-fi buffs and Trekkies to live out their fantasies of going boldly where no one has gone before, and while it's not quite perfect, it's still a fine MMORPG offering. The story takes place some thirty years after the movie, Nemesis, and expands on the lore revolving around the destruction of the Romulan homeworld, with the Klingons now moving in to take control. Now, war is raging between the Klingons, the Borg, the Dominion and others, with the Federation stuck in the middle. The game itself is a mix of elements which starts out with you creating a Federation character, with a number of options for races. The gameplay switches between two main aspects, space and land. When in space, you'll pilot your ship through the stars, exploring and engaging in tactical real-time combat, with pretty much everything under your command. When on planets, combat is again the focus, but which is a little slower-paced, requiring even more thought. The universe is true to its inspiration and feels genuinely alive, with heaps of alien races to meet, and which helps give the game even more appeal. For true Trekkies, this game is a must play. It really nails the atmosphere, with everything looking and sounding just right and which really helps to suck you in. There's plenty to see and do here, and you'll really feel like you're a starship captain, making this a very immersive experience. The combat is deep and strategic but always enjoyable, so if you are a fan of the Star Trek universe, check this out.
