The Final Crusade of Kroz

Adventure 1990 Dos Dosbox Apogee Third Person Puzzle based

Another satisfying entry in a solid series

The Kroz series of top down dungeon crawlers are notable for their mix of ASCII graphics and melding of rogue-like gameplay with realtime elements and which make for supremely enjoyable old-school experiences. This entry (which despite its name, isn't the end of the series, as it continues in Temple of Kroz and Return to Kroz, among others), is perhaps one of the weaker efforts but despite this, it remains a top class piece of entertainment. The series as a whole is one which didn't really develop much from the original Kingdom of Kroz, which is perhaps a little disappointing as little in the way of innovation or novelty was ever really introduced and this one continues in the same vein. As ever, the basic goal of the game is to find the exit on a series of dungeon-style levels, each of which is populated monsters and obstacles and with numerous puzzles which need to be solved. The key element of interest to franchise fans here is that it concludes the Super Kroz trilogy and, if completed, allows the player to finally achieve the series' ultimate aim: the possession of an amulet. Other than this, it remains very much business as usual and this is either a good or a bad thing, depending on your perspective. On the plus side, the levels are as well designed as ever, with more of the cunning traps and fiendishly difficult puzzles as well as plenty of satisfying old-school combat. On the downside, it is starting to feel more than a little over familiar and the games tend to blend into one if played back to back. However, if this doesn't bother you, or you're new to the series, there's much to enjoy here.
