Bard's Tale 3 - Thief of Fate

RPG 1988 Dos Dosbox Interplay Medieval

The same snide RPG, with a much larger world

Bard's Tale was among the first to make fun of RPG tropes, though at the beginning rather tamely, not so obvious. However, by the time this third game in the series appeared, this side of the game was much more obvious. We are still talking of a game made in a rather pre-pubescent period of game design, so don't expect anything out of the ordinarily story wise. The breaking of the tropes is still just barely visible and noticeable. Still, with a full host of games that only rehashed old school concepts and ideas, this one manages to feel fresh, simply because the older games in the series don't go that extra mile. Further on, Bard's Tale 3 - Thief of Fate is not the greatest looking RPG, not even in its type of construction. You get a very small frame into the bard's world, and you are always accompanied by your right hand collection of stats and other information. Anyway, if you loved or played the first two in the series, this third one won't disappoint. It has got a much more prominent snide side, but after a bit you realize that it is by no means a joke of a game, though it likes to make fun of the genre!
