Marching off to war
This is the sequel to the fairly obscure Beyond Overlord but if you have any interest in real-time or turn-based strategy games, both offerings are well worth seeking out and make for a pleasant change from the better known titles of the genre. As you might guess from the title, this one is a historical offering, and covers World War II from 1941 to 1945. You've got a number of options for play, including a full operation, and quick battles, with the full campaign being the most involving. Here you'll play as several nations, fighting your way through several geographical regions in key moments of the conflict. The main gameplay is a hybrid of turn-based and real-time elements, with missions taking place over a set number of turns and with an orders phase kicking off each one where you tell your units what to do and where to go. You'll then sit back and watch them carry those orders out but you won't be able to interact with them. Maps are quite detailed, with perhaps the most interesting aspect being the weather conditions which affect how things unfold. Barbarossa to Berlin might not be for the truly hardcore strategy gamers but for more casual or intermediate players, it offers a lot of fun. It's pretty accessible stuff, being easy to get into and understand, while the missions themselves are challenging and fun. The mix of styles actually works well and it can be tense stuff watching missions unfold. The visuals are simple but this doesn't matter when the core gameplay is this much fun.
