Bizarre but flawed graphic adventure
Guardians of Infinity is a graphic adventure which has possibly one of the most convoluted plots in gaming history, which manages to be engaging and original, and perhaps should be played for this reason alone. Unfortunately however, the gameplay can't quite live up to its storytelling ambition, but it remains an enjoyable adventure to be savoured. Basically, this plot revolves around the efforts of a group of special agents who have been charged by the inventor of a time machine to travel back and prevent the assassination of JFK. This requires players to issue commands to each of the various agents and who must carry out a variety of spy-like actions in order to ensure Kennedy is saved from the fatal bullet. In principle, this all sounds quite exciting, but unfortunately there are quite a few major issues which prevent the game from living up to its potential. Firstly, there is the interface, which is awkward and confusing and which makes it difficult to keep track of what is actually going on. Adding to the problems are the frequently nonsensical responses you receive from your agents, which just don't make much sense. The game is also insanely difficult, with a very strict time limit, while graphics are less than impressive, with static, ugly backdrops poorly supporting the text-based sections. As an attempt at a piece of interactive fiction, the game is certainly unusual enough to warrant an investigation for genre fans, but others might want to steer clear. However, if you do play the game, make sure you have the manual as it is required reading, containing as it does lots of vital information.
