Playable sidescroller/beat them up with the TMNT cast!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game is a sidescroller action game, that is all about action in the well known city invaded by other mutants, Dr. Brain and all the others. However, this is a very mild sidescroller, never going out of its way to impress with a whole lot. The background are repetitive, the action is also very repetitive and the ins and outs of the game will be pretty much delivered to you in full by the time you're done with the first few missions. But, nonetheless, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game plays really well, controls wise, and even in spite of the fact that the action and the levels are almost the same in principle, all the way through, you still get a kick out of the game, without issues. Now, quality wise, the graphics are alright, sort of well polished DOS 8bit in style, and so you get a whole lot out of it. So, if you are a fan of the animated series, of the turtles per se, or the setting this can be a cool, of lite journey; else you've also got Manhattan Project, the game that will come after this one was released, that takes the turtles and the action to the next place. So, go ahead, have it in your collection, TMNT will definitely not disappoint.
With the great success of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Konami tried to use the game and make another one like a side scroller platform game and I can't say that they were very successful at it. You play as one of the Turtles, go from one end of the level to the other and kill enemies. Simple as that. Since the Turtles eat pizza, the pizza in the game is your health and you can pick it up if you're low on energy. While on the first look it may seem cool and fun, after a while of playing all the inconsistencies start to show - the animation is not very good and you can hack and slash at the enemy not really hitting him, so only one slash out of three will really get him. The level designs are good but kind of repetitive and monotonous, so after a while you will probably get bored of the game and turn it off. The enemies have different colors of costumes, but they are more or less just the same people every level. The graphics are okay, nothing spectacular, and the sound effects are authentic and good. While the game will be interesting for a while, it doesn't provide any replay value and will soon be long forgotten. The third game, Manhattan Project, is a lot better.
