Poor monkey

Taking its inspiration not from the classic movie starring the giant ape but instead the classic video game that is Donkey Kong (and which also stars a giant ape), Kong's Revenge is a derivative but almost entirely unenjoyable example of the platforming genre. The game is broadly split into two parts, the first of which is distinctly familiar for anyone who has played the earlier game but adds in a few new elements to keep things fresh. The player must basically climb their way through five fairly extensive levels (which makes a change from the single screen approach), which represent buildings occupied by one of Kong's chums. Along the way, they have to leap over barrels and fireballs in similar fashion to the original. However, one of the additions that mixes things up a bit is levers which must be hit in order to activate moving platforms to help you reach your goal. The second part of the game switches things completely and turns it into a side scrolling platformer/run 'n' gun actioner where you once again have to avoid barrels and similar objects but where you now have access to a gun to take out enemies. finally, if you make it far enough, you face off against Kong and get the chance to rescue the girl. Kong's Revenge really is only for the most undiscerning of platform fans, lacking as it does anything which made it predecessor the classic that it is. The level design here is decidedly short of inspiration but the real problem is the snail's pace at which the game moves, with none of the fast-paced fun of its inspiration. The action sequence is just as uninvolving so really you're better of sticking with the original for your platforming fun and Turrican or Contra for some serious shooting action.
