Ports of Call

Simulation 1987 Dos Dosbox Aegis International Naval Trade or management

Shipping company simulator, a bit intricate but fun

Ports of Call puts you in the shoes of a commercial ship and cargo manager, which will have to deal with the daily managerial, transportation based and other activities specific to the trade. Quality wise, the simulation and the interaction with the simulation's bits and pieces is alright. Less so, unfortunately, are the graphics, which are a kind of washed down 2D, never too interesting, never polished enough. However, what redeems the game is it's highly specific simulation premise; While there are lots of economics and transportation based simulations out there (Port Royale, Transport Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon) few are as specific as this one. Also, the port and ship locks maneuvering is a puzzle/action bit that is quite unique to this game, and also pretty interesting for those that want an arcade take on that sort of ship specific activity. For the rest of us, though, I think the 3D version of this one will be a better one to attempt, since it also adds a few more perks beyond the graphics.

A very detailed and interesting naval business sim

This is a pretty good naval business game where you are in charge of managing a shipping company and you are both a ship owner and a ship captain, so you have a great deal of obligations, from managing your finances as a company and also controlling your ship's finances to fueling the ship when you have to. You have your own office, too. The game is a mix of strategic business management and arcade, which is an odd but successful mix in this case. It is very detailed and also very interesting, and it thinks of everything a shipping company director would have to think of, and the main goal is to make money. The game allows up to four players to play the game and there are three levels of difficulty to choose from. The graphics and sound are not top notch, but the great detail of the game and interesting gameplay make up for that easily. If you're into business simulations and like naval games, be sure not to miss this game or try out another similar game, like Ocean Trader.
